B : Highlights
Personnel Alannah Schwindt joined the library staff in January.
A special anniversary was reached by our
volunteer Marg
Hollister, who marked
her 10th year helping out in the library.
Automation System
Migration
The
final phase of the automation migration was reached when the circulation desk
was replaced. A special ribbon cutting
was held on May 14th. Costs
were minimal due to the sponsorships of the following: Tim Horton’s, Mark
Renaud, BroDart, Polaris, and Library Services Centre. New workroom furniture was installed in
March, increasing the efficiency of our materials processing.
Mary
and Carole continue to clean up errors in the database conversion. As part of their professional development,
both took a MARC cataloguing course by correspondence in 2008. They also attended the OLA conference in
January.
Children’s
Programming
Thanks to the promotional initiative
of staff, we once again had a successful summer reading program, with almost a
dozen sponsors supporting the program.
406 children registered for the program, compared to 470 in 2007. Sponsors of the program included TD Bank,
Knights of Columbus, International Machinists Union (DDM), Wendys and Burger
King, as well as an anonymous donor.
We
have partnered with a number of individuals and agencies to offer a broad range
of children’s programs, such as the weekly Jumpin’ Jive program, and the highly
successful Family Literacy Night, now an annual event. The Jumpin’ Jive program saw an increase in
participation, with 1,697 children involved, compared to 1,562 in 2007.
Appreciation
On behalf of the Library staff, I
would like to thank the members of the Library Board, for their continuing
interest in effective and efficient library service for our community. I am especially appreciative for the support
I received during my time away due to illness.
And to Mary Stevens for so ably picking up my continuing
responsibilities in my absence at the end of the year.
I would also like to express my
thanks to the staff for their dedication to the library and its patrons.
Finally, thanks are also expended to
Cynthia Hildebrand, Director of Community Services, and other Town staff for
the continuing support.
